Yo- Yo Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Fun Days!, People Days2 Comments

“Yo-Yo day is here…hooray! Not that you need an excuse to play with your Yo-Yo. Wherever you are today, get out your Yo-Yo and impress your friends, family, and co-workers with your Yo-Yo skills. And, do it at work today! If you don’t think it’s appropriate at work, consider the fact that three U.S. presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon) showed off their Yo-Yo expertise while in office!

It’s origin is hard to factually prove. Many believe that the Yo-Yo originated in China as early as 500-1000 B.C. However, their is some evidence that it was first used in Greece even before this time. Over the centuries the Yo-Yo has had it’s ups and downs (tee, hee).

The Yo-Yo was made wildly popular in America by businessman Donald F. Duncan Sr. He manufactured the “Duncan Yo-Yo” in the early 1900′s.

Celebrate the Yo-Yo today by “walking the dog” or “shooting the moon”, the most popular Yo-Yo tricks.

Origin of Yo-Yo Day:

National Yo-Yo Day was established as June 6th in honor of the birthday of Donald F. Duncan Sr.

While June 6th is recognized as Yo-Yo day, there is some unsubstantiated reference to June 10th.

Yo-Yo Trivia

The worlds largest Yo-Yo weighs 256 pounds, and is on display at the National Yo-Yo museum.

In 1992, Jeffrey Hoffman took a Yo-Yo into space aboard the shuttle Atlantis.”- Holiday Insights

Did you Know? The Freedom of Information Act was passed into law in 1966. It opened up a wealth of information to American citizens. James Madison would be very pleased!” – Holiday Insights

Are you a cookie monster? Americans eagerly await the annual Girls Scout cookie drive. It teaches the girls valuable skills, and generates income to support girl scouting activities. And, you get to munch on a variety of delicious cookies. Most people buy several boxes.” – Holiday Insights

“On this day in 1912, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low assembled a group of eighteen girls from Savannah, Georgia for the first ever Girl Scout meeting. Low believed that all girls should have the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. She organized service projects, outdoor adventures, and enrichment programs to get girls out of house and into the community.

Today, over 3.2 million girls and adults are active Girl Scout members, and over 50 million women are Girl Scout alumnae. According to the mission statement of the organization, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

In honor of Girl Scout Day, take a moment to recognize and celebrate all that Girl Scouts of the USA has done for local communities across the country!” Punchbowl

President’s Day!

by Kristina — Categories: People Days86 Comments

“Since 1968, it is celebrated on the third Monday in February

President’s Day is a day set aside to honor all of the U.S. presidents. We often think of two great presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln when we celebrate this holiday as it falls by design between their birthdays. But more and more of us, look at this day as a tribute to each and every person who has ever served in the office as President of the United States of America. It is a national holiday, although most businesses and industry do not recognize it as a paid holiday.”-Holiday Insights
