by Kristina — Categories: Medical Days430 Comments
It’s amazing how a day is created – this one is very unique…  Another day to celebrate life!  Just in time to think about ordering your Mother a bouquet!

“It’s National DNA Day! Today commemorates two important events in the history of DNA research—James Watson and Francis Crick’s discovery of the double helix in 1953, and the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003. Both of these accomplishments have had a huge impact on modern biomedical research and innovation.

The official sponsor of National DNA Day is the National Human Genome Research Institute, which is part of the NIH (National Institutes of Health). Every year, the institute hosts a series of presentations, online forums, and contests to help celebrate this unique branch of science.

Participate in one of the many activities happening today and take a moment to learn something new about genetics and DNA! Happy National DNA Day!” – Punchbowl

    National Walk to Work Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Helpful Days, Medical Days205 Comments

“U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson declared the first National Walk to Work Day as April 2, 2004.  With obesity and sedentary lifestyles growing at an alarming rate, National Walk to Work Day was initiated to draw attention to the need to get out and exercise, and to get in shape.

On this day, Americans are encouraged to walk to work. If you can’t walk to work, walking during lunch time, or another time of the day.  The goal is to walk 30 minutes a day. Health officials are hoping this will encourage people to add a 30 minute walk to their daily lives. Health officials, medical agencies, and medical organizations around the country state that a 30 minute walk will significantly improve you health. The benefits are many, including lower weight, less chance of heart disease, less risk of diabetes, and much more. This translates to a longer and healthier life.

Unmentioned in other articles, is the emotional and mental benefits of walking. Walking is relaxing and peaceful. If you walk in a park, or along a waterfront, it can be captivating. Need a quick picker upper? Take a walk today.

Note: Walking is free of charge. And, as of this writing there is no tax on walking, either.

So, if you can’t walk to work today, walk 30 minutes at a convenient time. Then, make it a apart of your daily life.”- Holiday insights

    National Doctor’s Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Medical Days207 Comments

“National Doctor’s Day was created to show appreciation to your doctors. Doctors perform vital diagnosis, treatment and care for yourself and your family. When you are well, your doctor keeps you well. When you are sick, there is no other person more important to you than your doctor.

Hallmark suggests you send your doctors a card of appreciation. (it’s no surprise to hear this from Hallmark). Card companies have cards for this event….no surprise here, either!

We suggest you simply tell your doctor(s) that you appreciate all that they do for you and your health. If you don’t see your doctor today, make a note to thank him(or her) at your next appointment. You can also send them candle roses!

    Origin of “National Doctor’s Day”:

Doctors’ Day observances date back to March 30, 1933. It was started by Eudora Brown Almond of Winder, Ga. The day marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. The first National Doctor’s Day was celebrated in 1991.

On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctors Day. The resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day was signed by President George Bush.” Holiday Insights

Today is National Mud Pack Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Medical Days83 Comments

“Pile on the facial. Ladies, this is your day. Guys, you can get a mud pack facial, too. Just don’t let your buddies know that you did!! Mud packs were once the rage for facial treatments. It is still popular. But, the mud in facials has been replaced with a variety of other ingredients. It is supposed to keep the skin young, soft and supple. Does it work? Girls who use it, swear by it.

Peloid is mud used therapeutically. Peloids consist of humus and minerals formed over many years by geological and biological, chemical and physical processes.
Numerous peloids are available today, of which the most popular are peat pulps, lake mud, sea mud and plant substances. Peloid procedures are also various; the most common of them are peloid wraps, peloid baths, and peloid packs applied locally to the part of the body, which is being treated.
Peloid packs and, specifically, peat, have been used in Europe for medicinal baths and wraps for the past 200 years.
Peloid treatments have been used for rheumatic disorders, osteoarthritis, gynecological disorders, sciatica, skin diseases, trauma and many more various afflictions and ailments.
Peloids are widely used in cosmetology. They are applied as face masks. Applying peloid masks once a week helps to revitalize the skin, tighten it and bind fluids in the skin layers. Regular use of peloids cause wrinkles to disappear and prevents new wrinkles from appearing

Did you know? A mud pack is a quick treatment for bee stings. Use it, if needed, when you are out on a hike, or until you can get to a place to be treated for bee and wasp stings.

    Today is World Alzheimer’s Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Medical Days286 Comments

World Alzheimer’s Day, September 21st of each year, is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning. At the moment, Alzheimer’s is progressive and irreversible.

Every 71 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. Today, it is estimated that about five million Americans and 30 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. In the US, about 360,000 people are newly diagnosed every year. Alzheimer’s affects about 10 percent of people ages 65 and up, and the prevalence doubles roughly every 10 years after age 65. Half of the population ages 85 and up may have Alzheimer’s.

Because the population of the U.S. is aging, the number of people with Alzheimer’s will continue to rise unless something can be done to stem the disease. At current rates, experts believe that as many as 16 million Americans will have the disease by the year 2050.

The theme for World Alzheimer’s Day™ 2011 is ‘Faces of dementia’

In our materials and activities ADI and Alzheimer associations across the world will focus on the many issues surrounding the ‘Faces of dementia’. They will be asking if you recognise the face of dementia while paying tribute to those who represent the ‘Faces of dementia’ in all parts of the world and working tirelessly to promote increased support and care for people with dementia and their carers.

Every year on 21 September Alzheimer associations across the globe unite to recognise World Alzheimer’s Day and 2011 will be no exception with events taking place internationally. We are confident that the large numbers of people involved and the media coverage these events will gain can make a real difference for people with dementia, their families and carers worldwide.

You may be noticing more grocery stores carrying gluten-free items. Some even have devoted shelf-space to for gluten-free groceries. In 1888 Dr. Samuel Gee described connected the dots between diet and controlling the Celiac disease. “Celiac disease disrupts the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine” according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse.

“There is a kind of chronic indigestion which is met within persons of all ages, yet is especially apt to affect children between one and five years old.” – Gee

The U.S. Senate passed the Celiac Awareness Day Resolution, to be observed annually on Gee’s birthday, Sept. 13.
