National Doctor’s Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Medical Days207 Comments

“National Doctor’s Day was created to show appreciation to your doctors. Doctors perform vital diagnosis, treatment and care for yourself and your family. When you are well, your doctor keeps you well. When you are sick, there is no other person more important to you than your doctor.

Hallmark suggests you send your doctors a card of appreciation. (it’s no surprise to hear this from Hallmark). Card companies have cards for this event….no surprise here, either!

We suggest you simply tell your doctor(s) that you appreciate all that they do for you and your health. If you don’t see your doctor today, make a note to thank him(or her) at your next appointment. You can also send them candle roses!

Origin of “National Doctor’s Day”:

Doctors’ Day observances date back to March 30, 1933. It was started by Eudora Brown Almond of Winder, Ga. The day marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. The first National Doctor’s Day was celebrated in 1991.

On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. In 1990, the congress and the senate approved legislation establishing National Doctors Day. The resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day was signed by President George Bush.” Holiday Insights

Something on a Stick Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Fun Days!16 Comments

“Something on a Stick Day celebrates things on a stick. Isn’t this just a neat day?  We thought you’d agree.

So what comes on a stick? Practically anything. The first thing that comes to mind is popsicles and fudgecicles. Hotdogs are poplar on a stick at campfires. There’s also corndogs, and shrimp and many chinese treats. Cocktail wieners and cheese are picked and eaten on a stick(a toothpick).

You can also get just about anything on a stick when receiving food samples at a store or festival.

Celebrate this fun day by serving food for meals and snacks on a stick. The kids will love it. So will you!”-Holiday Insights

National Joe Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Fun Days!99 Comments

“What do you know, Joe, March 27 is your day. National “Joe” Day celebrates you if your name is Joe. The name Joseph reached the height of its popularity in the 1890s (ranked No. 6) and 1910s (ranked No. 5). From 1911 to 2010, Joseph was the eighth-most popular baby boy name in the U.S., trailing behind James, John, Robert, Michael, William, David and Richard according to the Social Security Administration.

Enjoy a “cup of joe” or a cup of coffee. The phrase might have originated from a modification of the words java or jamoke. The use of Joe in phrases was common in the 1930s and appeared in various expressions including “an ordinary Joe” to the reference to an enlisted man as “GI Joe” according to World Wide Words.”Yahoo

by Kristina — Categories: Fun Days!, Misc days32 Comments
“Today is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! If you’ve been following our daily Reasons to Celebrate, then you know how many interesting and unique holidays there are in the world. Today is your chance to make one up!

Establishing an official national holiday is not an easy process. For example, in the 1800s Sarah Josepha Hale decided that our nation should observe a national day of thanks. She wrote countless letters to politicians, governors, and even the president. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln agreed to Hale’s proposal, but Thanksgiving did not become an official national holiday until 1941!

To celebrate Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, come up with a creative, meaningful, or quirky idea for a holiday. Invite friends and family over tonight for its first annual celebration!”= PunchBowl

International Waffle Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Food Days72 Comments

“Waffle Day is a day that you can waffle on issues and decisions. And, it certainly is a day to eat waffles.

International Waffle Day

This holiday originated in Sweden. It is called Våffeldagen. The holiday coincides with the Feast of the Annunciation (On this day, nine months before Christmas, we celebrate the incarnation of our saviour, Jesus Christ. The Archangel Gabriel came to Mary of Nazareth and told her she was to bear the Son of God, Jesus Christ). This day was also considered the start of spring in Sweden and Europe.  It became a custom for Swedish families to celebrate the two events by making waffles on this day.

The origin of the waffle: The waffle dates back to the 1300s in Greece. Greeks cooked flat cakes between two metal pans. At the time, they topped it with cheeses and herbs. Pancake syrup wasn’t around back then.

Waffles are commonly eaten as breakfast or a snack. They are also an occasional dinner meal for some people.”- Holiday Insights

Culinary historians believe that humans first discovered raisins when they came across grapes drying on a vine. These sundried morsels soon became one of the most popular food sweeteners, second only to honey. Raisins are an excellent source fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, and certain B vitamins. Add some dark chocolate into the mix and you’ll also get a healthy dose of antioxidants and important minerals.

Enjoy a handful of chocolate-covered raisins today in honor of National Chocolate-Covered Raisin Day!”Punchbowl

National Chip and Dip Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Food Days390 Comments
“It’s National Chip and Dip Day! Chips and dip are the iconic American party snack. Whether you prefer tortilla chips, potato chips, or corn chips, there are dozens of dips to complement your snack of choice.

Humans have been dipping their food into sweet and savory sauces for centuries. Some of the earliest dips were hummus and olive oil, which originated in the Mediterranean region and are still very popular today. Salsas and dips made with sour cream became popular in the United States in the 1940s. After the Great Depression, many middle class families found themselves without a maid for the first time. Chips and dip became the go-to party dish because it was so simple to prepare.

To celebrate National Chip and Dip Day, invite some friends over for a potluck-style chip and dip party!”Punchbowl

Fragrance Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Fun Days!179 Comments

“Don’t put up a stink about today. Today is Fragrance Day. It is a great smelling day. The olfactory nerves in your nose, will enjoy this special day. Ladies in particular, will enjoy today because they just love perfumes. And guys, you’ve gotta admit that your gal’s perfume attracts you to her.

Perfumes have been in use for hundreds of years. In ancient times, they were used to hide body odors. At the time, baths were infrequent. After a few days, things began to smell less than ideal. Perfumes played an important role in making the atmosphere more palatable. Today, the daily shower eliminates the bad odors. But, we still like the smell and attraction of perfume.

Favorite Fragrance Day Movie: Scent of a Woman

Celebrate today by buying some perfume or cologne for yourself, or  as a gift for someone. Make sure to put on just the right amount of perfume or cologne. Overpowering perfume ruins the value of the fragrance to the “sniffer”.

Also, check your room deodorizers, and replace them with a new fragrance, if needed.” – Holiday Insights

Spring Vernal Equinox Day!

by Kristina — Categories: Misc days49 Comments

“Ah, Spring! A time when “a young man’s thoughts turn to thoughts of love”…and outdoors and fishing and gardening and…….. And, let’s not leave out the ladies. Spring brings out these thoughts and more for  both ladies and gentlemen. So, let’s go and enjoy what many believe to be the best season of them all!

The Spring (or Vernal) Equinox brings days and nights in equal proportions. It is simply the day when there is exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime. But, did you know that this is only true on the Equator? For the rest of us, there is more or less depending upon where we live on the planet. We won’t go any deeper than that as this site is not a science course.

The other thing to note is that the Spring Equinox is just a calendar date. From a standpoint of weather in your area, real spring arrives sooner or later depending upon where you live in the Northern Hemisphere.

Did you know? The Persian New Year begins on the Spring Equinox.” – Holiday Insights
